Founded by Teachers

STEM Academy of Boyle Heights was founded in 2014 by a six teachers to provide a STEM-based education for students in Boyle Heights. Los STEMateros

Robotics has also become a hallmark of STEM, competing as “Los STEMateros.” Beyond hosting the VEX IQ robotics competition for elementary and middle school students, our students consistently qualify for regional, national and world championships in a variety of formats. In 2023, our students began participating in Hydrogen Grand Prix Pro-RC Car Competition and qualified for the World Final in Las Vegas. In 2024, an unprecedented all-girls group, “Las STEMateras,” competed in the World Final in Anaheim and garnered significant media attention. STEM has also become the center of aerial drone competitions for Los Angeles Unified, becoming the first school to host the REC Foundation Aerial Drone Competition. In May, a team from STEM won the Aerial Drone Championship in Utah.

Relocation

In August 2024, the school was relocated to its own campus to expand the STEM program to more students. We look forward to the next ten years in our new home, and continued success in offering unique opportunities for our students, their families and the community.

Gold Linked-Learning

The school was the first in the nation to receive Linked Learning Gold Certification through a virtual review process in 2020 and re-certified Gold in 2024. The Engineering Design pathway provides students with a robust career technical education (CTE) program with hands-on learning in a true engineering maker space. As a part of the capstone course, students have the opportunity to become certified in Autodesk Inventor – an industry-recognized computer-aided design program.
